Minamoto no Kanetsune : ウィキペディア英語版
Minamoto no Kanetsuna

was a son of Minamoto no Yorimasa.
Kanetsuna participated in the first Battle of Uji in 1180 that opened the Gempei War. He accompanied his father, Yorimasa, and brother, Nakatsuna, to battle against the Taira clan. In the Battle of Uji, the commander, Minamoto no Yorimasa, realized that his forces were unable to stop the powerful Taira from advancing, whose forces were overwhelming. Yorimasa decided to retreat to defend Byōdō-In temple with his army and sōhei, so-called "warrior monks" of feudal Japan. Taira samurai, in pursuit of Yorimasa, besieged the temple, while Yorimasa's son, Kanetsuna, who had been struck by an arrow in the forehead, fought on to help his father defend the temple. However, a sudden attack by Taira samurai resulted in the death of Kanetsuna, and the loss of the temple. As a result of this defeat Kanetsuna's father committed ritual suicide. This was the first recorded instance of a samurai performing seppuku to regain honour after military defeat.
Legend has it that Yorimasa's head was removed by one of his own retainers to stop the Taira from doing so and, weighted by a rock, was sunk in the Uji River.
